What is a fungal nail?

September 23, 2024

A fungal nail (onychomycosis), also known as a nail fungus, is a fungal infection of the nail. Fungal nails most commonly occur on the toes but can also appear on the fingers. In almost all cases, a fungal nail is harmless. However, many people find fungal nails bothersome because they look unsightly, which is why many choose to have them treated. In some cases, fungal nails can cause discomfort and pain when walking.

One in four Dutch people will experience fungal nails at some point in their lives. The risk is about equal for men and women. The following groups have an increased risk of developing fungal nails:

  • People with a weakened immune system, for example due to chemotherapy or AIDS.

  • People with diabetes.

  • Older adults. As you age, the elasticity of your nails decreases, making nails more prone to damage and allowing fungi to penetrate more easily.

About 6 to 8% of adults suffer from onychomycosis. The most common fungi responsible are Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigitale.
