Where does the smell of stinky shoes come from?
Stinky shoes are a big annoyance. But where does the sweaty smell in shoes actually come from? Almost everyone wears shoes all day. Often these are shoes that don't breathe well, and as a result, your feet can’t release their heat and you’re more likely to get sweaty feet. The sweat glands in your feet produce an average of 250 ml of sweat per day! Often, however, it’s much more than that, for example, in people who suffer from sweaty feet, athletes, or those with physically demanding jobs. Now, most people know that fresh sweat doesn’t usually smell. But your shoes are also filled with bacteria and fungi. Warm, damp shoes are ideal for them. The sweaty smell / stinky feet occur when these bacteria and fungi convert components of the sweat into smelly substances. This leads to stinky shoes, such as football shoes, sports shoes, sneakers, gym shoes, etc.
What to do about stinky shoes?
As you can see above, stinky shoes are caused by the combination of sweat and bacteria / fungi. To get rid of the smell from your stinky shoes, you need to eliminate the sweat or the bacteria from your stinky shoes. Even better and more effective is to tackle both! If your shoes remain damp, the bacteria / fungi will quickly return. And you’ll never get rid of the problem, and your shoes will keep smelling.
