How to waterproof shoes and boots

A shoe that repels water stays looking good for longer, dries faster and smells less. Yet waterproofing often goes wrong: the wrong product on suede, a coat sprayed over dirt, or a pair left to harden on a radiator afterwards. Here is what works per material, how often to do it, and the step most people skip.

What waterproofing does and does not do

A waterproofing treatment leaves a thin, water-repellent layer around the fibres. Water then beads up and rolls off instead of soaking in. It also keeps dirt and salt stains out, which matters most in winter.

What it will not do:

  • ❌ Turn a non-waterproof shoe genuinely waterproof. In sustained rain or a puddle, water still gets in through the seams and the tongue.
  • ❌ Repair a damaged membrane.
  • ❌ Prevent odour. Sweat comes from the inside and stays in the lining.

Think of it as a raincoat for your shoe: it keeps water out for the first few hours and helps the material dry more easily.

Step by step

  1. Clean the shoe first. Spraying over dirt seals the dirt in. Brush suede dry with a suede brush, wipe leather and textile with a barely damp cloth.
  2. Let the shoe dry completely. This is the step that gets skipped. On a damp shoe the layer will not bond and the moisture ends up trapped inside. A pair soaked in the morning is often still damp the next day if left in open air.
  3. Spray evenly from about twenty centimetres away. Outside or by an open window, and never inside the shoe.
  4. Leave the first coat for at least an hour, then add a second thin coat. Two thin coats beat one heavy one.
  5. Let it cure at room temperature, not on a radiator and not in direct sun.

Test it with a few drops of water on the toe. If they roll off, you are done. If they soak in, add another coat.

How often should you reapply?

As a rule of thumb: after every deep clean, and otherwise every ten to fifteen wears in wet weather. Walking boots that see a lot of water want it more often. Once water darkens the material instead of beading up, it is time.

Half the job: drying properly

Waterproofing keeps water out. Once moisture does get in, how you dry the shoe decides whether it stays in good shape.

What not to do: radiators, heaters, hairdryers or strong sun. The outside then dries far faster than the core, leather hardens and shrinks and membranes can delaminate. The tumble dryer is out too, as glued soles come away.

What works:

  • Stuff the shoe with paper and replace it after a few hours.
  • Stand the pair at an angle, opening upwards, somewhere with air movement.
  • Take the insoles out. They hold most of the moisture and dry much faster loose.
  • Use a shoe dryer. It pushes air at roughly body temperature through the shoe, heel and toe box included. That gets a soaked pair dry in about an hour, without the heat that damages materials.

Be wary of devices advertised with uv lamps: ordinary led lights do nothing to odour or micro-organisms, and real uv-c light does not belong in a device you open and close at home.

Dry and water-repellent keeps odour away

Moisture is the fuel for odour. A shoe that takes two days to dry after a downpour spends two days as a comfortable home for bacteria and fungi. Waterproofing means less water gets in, drying means it gets back out.

Frequently asked questions

How do you waterproof shoes? Clean them, let them dry completely, then apply two thin coats of a waterproofing product suited to the material with at least an hour in between. It makes an ordinary shoe water-repellent rather than fully waterproof.

Can you waterproof suede shoes? Yes, with a water-based spray made for suede and nubuck. Avoid wax and leather grease, which flatten and darken the nap.

How often should shoes be waterproofed? After every deep clean, and otherwise every ten to fifteen wears in wet conditions. When water soaks in instead of beading up, reapply.

Can I spray a wet shoe? No. The layer will not bond and the moisture stays trapped. Dry the shoe fully first, with paper and airflow or in a shoe dryer.

Does waterproofing help with smelly shoes? Indirectly. Less moisture gets in, and moisture is what causes odour. The smell itself sits in the lining and insole, so you deal with that by drying and treating the inside.

Is waterproofing spray safe for Gore-Tex? Yes, as long as the product stays breathable. Heavy wax blocks the membrane pores so the shoe can no longer move moisture out.
