Boots are the worst thing you'll ever try to dry. Low shoes let moisture out through the opening. Boots trap it, right down at the toes, and that's exactly where it needs to go.
If you've ever pulled on a pair of work boots on a Monday morning and felt that cold, clammy lining, you already know the problem. Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and why boots go musty so much faster than trainers.
Why boots take so long to dry
The shaft acts like a blocked chimney. Warm, damp air wants to rise, but no dry air gets in at the bottom to replace it. You end up with a pocket of still, humid air sitting exactly where your toes go.
The material is often waterproof by design. Rubber, coated leather and membranes like Gore-Tex keep rain out, which means they're just as good at keeping moisture in. That's not a fault, it's the whole point of the boot.
There's usually a lining. Insulated winter boots and lined work boots hold litres of moisture in that layer, and it's the slowest part of the whole boot to dry.
There's simply more of it. More material, more stitching, more padding, more moisture that needs to go somewhere.
The result is familiar: boots that feel dry on the outside after a day but are still damp inside. Damp and warm is exactly the environment bacteria and fungi like, which is how boots end up with that musty smell that never quite goes away. How to dry wet boots overnight
If you need them ready for tomorrow, this is the order that actually matters.
- Take the insole out. It holds more moisture than the rest of the boot combined, and it dries on its own far faster lying flat.
- Stand the boots upside down or at an angle. Gravity does some of the work, letting water run towards the opening instead of pooling at the toe.
- Get air moving through them. An ordinary fan pointed at the opening beats a radiator every time, because it's airflow that shifts moisture, not heat on its own.
- Stuff them loosely with newspaper, and swap it every hour or two. It pulls moisture out but never reaches right down into a tall shaft, so don't rely on it alone.
- Leave them somewhere with airflow, not a sealed cupboard. A closed space just traps the humidity you're trying to remove.
Do all five and a pair of leather boots will usually be wearable by morning. Soaked wellies or heavily lined winter boots may need longer, simply because there's more moisture to shift.

Drying work boots
If you're on your feet in the same pair eight hours a day, drying isn't about comfort, it's maintenance. A steel toe cap cools faster than the rest of the boot, so condensation tends to build up right around the toes, the one spot that's hardest to reach.
One pair simply won't survive daily wear if it never gets a full day to dry out properly. Rotating two pairs, so each one gets a full 24 hours off, solves most of the problem before you've spent a penny on equipment.
Drying walking boots
Walking boots are usually built with a Gore-Tex or similar membrane, and that membrane doesn't like heat. Keep drying below around 60°C, because anything hotter can affect the glue holding the sole together and the seams themselves.
After a wet hike, remove the laces and insoles, loosen the tongue right up and let air get in from both the top and the sole. If you're drying them at a campsite or a cabin with no plug socket, propping them upside down near a stove (not directly on it) and swapping the newspaper packing works surprisingly well.
Drying wellies and rubber boots
Rubber doesn't breathe at all, so whatever gets in only comes out with airflow. This is the category where drying without any kind of device is hardest. Turn them upside down to let water drain, then get air moving through them as soon as you can. Left standing with water pooled inside, they'll start to smell within a day or two.
Should you buy an electric boot dryer?
For anyone drying boots more than a few times a month, an electric boot dryer earns its keep. Two things decide whether one is actually worth using:
- Reach. The airflow has to get down to the toes, not just warm the top of the shaft.
- Real airflow, not just heat. A warm rod with no fan heats the boot without removing the moisture, and a warm, damp boot is worse than a cold, damp one.
When you're comparing options, a few points make the difference between a boot dryer that helps and one that's a waste of a socket:
- Does it reach right down to the toe, or only the top of the shaft?
- Is there a proper fan, not just a heating element?
- Is there a timer or automatic shut-off, since boots are usually left drying overnight?
- What temperature does it run at? Leather and membranes don't like heat much above 60°C.
- Does it do anything about odour, or only about moisture? Drying prevents new smell, it doesn't remove smell that's already in the lining.
A word of warning on UV. Some dryers advertise a UV light as a way to freshen the inside. UV only has an effect on surfaces it directly reaches, and there's no evidence it does anything inside the folds, seams or lining of a boot, which is exactly where the smell tends to live. Don't buy a boot dryer for the UV feature alone.
