I know what works, what does not, and where other brands fall short. And I am not going to tell you that you must buy a Shoefresh. Sometimes a cheaper alternative is perfectly fine.

🥇 #1 Shoefresh Opod Detect: best shoe dryer of 2026

Score: 9.4/10 · Price: €179 · View product →

The Opod Detect is the most advanced shoe freshener on the market and our number one for 2026. It has everything the standard Opod has, so ozone cleaning, a powerful fan, three temperature settings and automatic start, plus two extra features that make the difference for heavy users. Shoefresh is also the brand with the longest track record in this list, more than twelve years and over 200,000 users.

What makes the Detect special?

  1. Moisture sensors measure the actual moisture inside your shoes. Not completely dry after the programme? It automatically starts another cycle. Guaranteed fully dry.
  2. Two heating elements dry more efficiently and use 30% less electricity.

Who is it for? The Detect is ideal for active households where the shoe dryer runs daily. Think families with several sporty children, or athletes who train twice a day.

Pros: - Everything the Opod has, plus moisture sensors - Guaranteed 100% dry - 30% lower power consumption - 90 day trial period and 2 year warranty - Customer service you can always reach

Cons: - €50 more expensive than the standard Opod - Same fan, so the same noise level

Our verdict: the very best shoe dryer you can buy, and the reason it takes the top spot. The moisture sensors genuinely add something if your shoes are often soaked through: you never have to check whether a second cycle is needed. If your budget is tighter, the standard Opod below does almost everything the Detect does.

🥈 #2 Shoefresh Opod: best all round shoe dryer

Score: 9.2/10 · Price: €129 · View product →

The Shoefresh Opod is the best rated shoe dryer in Europe. With 4.7/5 based on 3,641+ independent reviews (Reviews.io) and more than 200,000 users, this is the reference point in the market. Shoefresh has been around for more than twelve years, longer than any other brand in this list.

What makes the Opod the best?

The Opod combines three things no other shoe dryer in this price range offers:

  1. Active oxygen (ozone) tackles the bacteria and fungi that cause odour. Not a temporary fix, but an approach at the source
  2. Powerful fan and warm air dries shoes from the inside out in 60-90 minutes, heels included
  3. 3 programmes (Sport 60°C, Sneaker 60°C, Leather 40°C) for every type of shoe

On top of that: automatic start through infrared sensors, overheating protection, CE certification, and a stylish Dutch design.

Awards and recognition: - 🏆 Red Dot Design Award 2025 - 🏆 Shopping Award 2025 - Partnerships with ADO Den Haag, FC Volendam, Willem II, Braxgata Hockey

What users say:

"Works simple and effective. My teenagers love to keep their football shoes and runners smell free." Filip, Reviews.io

"I wear my shoes for work 12 hours a day and I am happy to notice that they are dry and feel fresh every day. I put them in at 10pm and the next day they feel dry as unworn." Frank, Reviews.io

Pros: - Dries and cleans in one cycle - 3 programmes for all materials - Automatic start and stop - 90 day trial period - 2 year warranty - Customer service you can always reach - 12+ years of experience, 200,000+ users

Cons: - Higher purchase price than budget models - Needs a ventilated room (utility room or garage) - Slight fan noise

Our verdict: the Shoefresh Opod is the best value shoe dryer for anyone who trains regularly. The combination of drying, cleaning and automatic operation is unmatched. You earn the €129 back because your shoes last longer and you never have to bin a pair because of the smell.

🥉 #3 ShoeDry Airo: best budget shoe dryer

Score: 6.7/10 · Price: ~€50

The ShoeDry Airo is the best selling budget shoe dryer on Amazon and at Decathlon. For around €50 you get a shoe dryer with ION technology, a different cleaning principle than ozone.

How does the ShoeDry Airo work? You put your shoes on the holders, start the programme, and the appliance dries them with a fan and warm air. The ION technology is meant to tackle bacteria and odour, but the effect is more limited than on a shoe dryer with ozone.

Specifications: - ION technology (no ozone) - 100 watt - Drying time: around 2 hours - Suitable for sizes 30-50 - Timer function - Fan

Pros: - Affordable (~€50) - Widely available (Amazon, Decathlon) - ION technology on board - Fits a wide range of sizes - Easy to use - Dries well if you give it some time

Cons: - ION is less effective than ozone against bacteria and fungi - No material specific programmes (one setting) - No automatic start and stop - No heel dryer - Shorter track record - Less powerful fan than professional models

Our verdict: a solid budget option if you want a bit more than a basic model. The ION technology is a plus compared to models that do not clean at all. But if odour is your main problem, ION falls short next to ozone. And you miss the programmes, the automatic start, the heel dryer, the design and the years of proven quality you get with Shoefresh.

#4 MaxxDry Heavy Duty: best for tall boots and gloves

Score: 7.0/10 · Price: around £80

MaxxDry is an American brand that is widely sold through UK retailers. The Heavy Duty is a forced air dryer that handles two pairs at once, including wellies and walking boots thanks to removable extension tubes.

How does it work? A fan pushes air through four ports. You can run it with mild heat or with no heat at all, which makes it safe for delicate linings, leather and neoprene. According to the manufacturer it dries four items in about an hour.

Specifications: - Forced air, with a mild heat or no heat setting - 4 ports, so two pairs at the same time - Removable extension tubes for tall boots - 1 year warranty - Sold through UK outdoor and footwear retailers

Pros: - Handles tall boots, shoes and gloves at once - Gentle on delicate materials thanks to the no heat option - Fast for a pure air dryer - Widely available in the UK

Cons: - No cleaning technology at all, so odour comes back - No programmes and no automatic start - Bulky, more of a boot room appliance than a living space one - 1 year warranty against 2 years at Shoefresh - No trial period

Our verdict: a solid choice if your main problem is wet wellies or ski boots and you have space in a utility room. But it only dries. If the smell is what bothers you, an appliance with active oxygen tackles the cause instead of the symptom.

#5 Drysure Extreme: best non electric option

Score: 6.0/10 · Price: around £30

Drysure is a British brand from London and the only genuine UK player in this comparison. The Extreme is not an electric dryer at all: it is a pair of inserts filled with moisture absorbing beads that you put in your boots after use.

How does it work? You slide the inserts into your boots and leave them overnight. The beads pull the moisture out of the lining. No power, no heat, no noise. The inserts are reusable.

Specifications: - Non electric, moisture absorbing beads - Reusable - Around 0.8 kg per set - Suitable for ski boots, walking boots, wellies and trainers

Pros: - No electricity needed, so ideal for travel, ski trips and festivals - Completely silent - No heat at all, so zero risk of material damage - Cheapest option in this list

Cons: - Works overnight, so it is far slower than a powered dryer - Soaked boots need more than one session - No cleaning technology, so it does not tackle the bacteria that cause odour - The beads need to dry out again between uses - One pair at a time

Our verdict: a clever product for a specific job. Take them on a ski trip or a hiking holiday where you have no plug and they earn their place. As your everyday solution at home after training they are simply too slow, and they do nothing about the smell.

Frequently asked questions

Which shoe dryer is the best in 2026?

The Shoefresh Opod Detect is the best shoe dryer of 2026, thanks to moisture sensors that keep drying until your shoes really are dry. Its sister model, the Shoefresh Opod, is the best choice on value thanks to the combination of speed (60-90 min), powerful ozone cleaning, 3 programmes and automatic operation. With 3,641+ reviews (4.7/5), 12+ years of experience and several awards it is the best rated shoe dryer in Europe.

Is an expensive shoe dryer worth it?

That depends on your situation. If you train daily and odour is a problem, you earn the investment back because your shoes last longer. Plenty of athletes bin shoes purely because of the smell. A good shoe dryer saves you that. On top of that, more expensive models come with better warranty, better service and a longer lifespan.

What is the difference between ION and ozone?

ION technology (as used in the ShoeDry Airo) works with negative ions to neutralise odours. Ozone (active oxygen, as used by Shoefresh) is a stronger cleaning agent that tackles bacteria and fungi more directly. In practice ozone is more effective against stubborn smells.

What is the difference between a shoe dryer and a shoe freshener?

A shoe dryer only dries. A shoe freshener dries and cleans, usually with active oxygen (ozone) or ION technology. The Shoefresh Opod is a shoe freshener: it does both in one programme.

Is PEET available in the UK?

PEET is an American brand and it is searched for a lot in the UK, but buying one here is not straightforward. Some models turn up through resellers and importers, and PEET sells a separate adapter for 220 volt use, so always check the voltage and the plug before you order. That is the main reason PEET did not make this top 5: an appliance you cannot easily buy, or get serviced, is hard to recommend.

Is a boot dryer the same as a shoe dryer?

Technically yes. Boot dryer is the term people use for walking boots, wellies, ski boots and football boots, shoe dryer more for trainers. The appliances in this comparison handle both, as long as the boot fits on the holder.

Can I use a shoe dryer for the whole family?

Yes. Models like the Shoefresh Opod handle sizes 26 to 48. After each cycle (60-90 min) you can put the next pair on. Plenty of families use theirs for sports shoes, work boots, trainers and even the kids' gloves.
