Shoe dryer or boot dryer: is there a difference?
The technology behind the two is the same: warm air, ideally moved by a fan, and on the better models a cleaning function. "Boot dryer" is the term people reach for when it comes to walking boots, wellies, ski boots and football boots, while "shoe dryer" is used more for trainers and everyday shoes.
The practical difference is size and build. A boot dryer is usually bigger and sturdier, because a tall boot is heavy and top heavy. Put a pair of wellies or ski boots on a small, light shoe dryer and one of two things happens: the appliance tips over, or the air only reaches the bottom few centimetres while the top of the boot stays damp. Some boot dryers solve this with extension tubes that reach further up the shaft.
So the question to ask is not which word is on the box, but whether the appliance is stable enough for your heaviest footwear and whether the airflow actually reaches the whole boot. On top of that, look at how fast it dries, whether it has a fan, whether it cleans as well as dries, and whether it protects the material of your footwear.
Why you need a shoe dryer
You might be thinking: "I just put my shoes on the radiator, that works fine." Let me explain why that is a bad idea, and why more and more athletes switch to a shoe dryer.
Wet shoes on a radiator cause damage
A radiator dries your shoes from the outside in. That sounds sensible, but the problem is the high contact temperature. The direct heat of a radiator (60-80°C at the surface) attacks the glue, lets soles come loose, and makes leather shrink and crack.
Compare it to a sauna: you can sit comfortably in a room at 80°C, but grab a pipe at 80°C and you burn yourself instantly. The same applies to your shoes. Gradual drying with warm air is safe. Direct contact heat is not.
Bacteria and fungi cause the smell
The smell in your shoes does not come from sweat. Sweat itself is odourless. The stench appears when bacteria feed on the moisture and skin cells inside your shoes. In a dark, damp shoe those bacteria multiply extremely quickly.
Drying alone helps temporarily, but heat by itself does not remove the bacteria. They simply wait for your next workout. That is why the smell always comes back if all you do is dry. A shoe dryer with a cleaning function (active oxygen) actually tackles those bacteria and fungi.

4. UV shoe dryers: a warning
There are also shoe dryers on the market that claim to clean with UV light. We want to warn you about this category, because there is a lot of misleading marketing in it.
The problem with UV shoe dryers:
There are two scenarios, and neither one is good:

The UV lamp is a simple LED that does nothing. Many cheap "UV shoe dryers" use a blue LED that looks like UV light but does not have the right frequency to fight bacteria effectively. The wavelength is simply too low to disinfect. You are paying for a light that looks professional and does nothing.

The UV lamp does work, and then it is dangerous. Real UV-C radiation (the frequency that genuinely can fight bacteria) is harmful to your eyes and skin. Scientific research has shown that UV radiation can cause DNA damage and cell mutations. On top of that it is physically impossible for light to reach the entire inside of a shoe. Every shadow, seam and fold stays untreated.
Our advice: avoid UV shoe dryers. Choose active oxygen (ozone) as the cleaning method instead. It is proven effective, it reaches the whole inside of the shoe, and it is safe when the appliance is CE certified and you use it in a ventilated room.
How does an electric shoe dryer work?
The details differ per type, but the principle is always the same: removing moisture from your shoes through heat and air circulation.
On a modern shoe dryer with ozone it works like this:
