Although fungi are present on everyone’s skin and under the nail edges, they usually cause no problems for most people. An infection can only develop if the fungi penetrate the nail. A moist and/or damaged nail is more susceptible to fungal infections. When the skin or nail becomes infected, it is called a fungal nail infection. The most common fungi causing fungal nails are Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigitale, which also cause athlete’s foot.
Fungi thrive and multiply well in warm, moist environments, making your shoes an ideal breeding ground. Swimming pools and public showers are also perfect environments for fungi and bacteria, which is why athlete’s foot is sometimes called “swimmer’s eczema.”
